World Building 2

Hi guys, lets continue looking at world building. If your story has a large group of people living and working in an small area, commonly referred to as a community. A form of governance will need to be considered, especially if the main characters are going to live and work in that setting. For most stories the assumption that there is an authority is enough for the story to progress. However there might be a case when your character either is, becomes, or contends with the authority established in your book. The type of authority that is present in your setting needs to be at the very least considered so that you at least know what sort of response is reasonable for the authority. There are two extreme poles of response the oppressive and the enlightened. The oppressive will come down hard on […]

World Building 1

Let’s start at the beginning, with world building. Now, for those that just read, it might get a little tedious but for those that love to write, come along on a journey. When writing, we need to know just a few things; Plot, Person, and Place. World building falls under the place. The type of story you write will be heavily influenced by the setting you place it in. However, the setting doesn’t limit the story you tell. For instance, Star Wars and Star Treck, both take place in space but one is fantasy and the other is science fiction. Remember, you can tell any story you want in any setting you want. Choosing a place where you set your story is the foundation of your story. A setting in space will have different needs to consider when writing than on a planet. […]

Putting it all together

Hi guys this is the last in the series of senses, thanks to my mother for this ideas. If you have any ideas for blog posts drop me a comment and I will see if I can squeeze it in. Today I want to look at the challenge of putting all the senses together, to create a complete scene. First thing we need to establish is that not all people experience all senses at once, people with Autism do but they are gifted like that. Nearly everyone experiences there senses in distinctly and normally tune out some senses when going about their daily lives. It takes extreme training to soak in all the senses at once and have your brain register them all at once. So its ok to write in the same manner. So unless you want to highlight something special then […]

Emotion, it’s how we feel.

Hi guys, I left this one to the end because it was the most difficult to grasp even for me. Emotions: everyone has them and the sensations that come with them are as complex as their own book. Lets jump right in and talk about the most common saying that centres on emotions, ‘Show don’t tell’. Show don’t tell basically means that the readers want to experience the emotions and events of the book without being told want is going on. ‘Sandy was angry at Bob.’ This example is a great sentence in that it has all the components that make a sentence however when dealing with a story it is pretty lack lustre, because we are simply just told that Sandy is angry at Bob instead of showing us that Sandy was angry at Bob. To achieve this we can describe how […]
