Character depth

Hi guys! Ever come across a character in your reading and found that they only ever respond in a very predictable way? What you might have come across is a character that lacks depth. Characters are like people, they need to have depth for people to love them. Many people believe that to give their characters depth is to give them a huge backstory, which might work, but then you end up dumping the backstory so that the reader knows how much effort was invested into this great character. I have found even in characters that have a huge back story with complicated twists and turns, it is still possible to have a plat or two dimensional character. The reason for this is very simple: the character doesn’t respond to that complicated story in any meaningful way. For characters to stop being two […]

Putting it all together

Hi guys this is the last in the series of senses, thanks to my mother for this ideas. If you have any ideas for blog posts drop me a comment and I will see if I can squeeze it in. Today I want to look at the challenge of putting all the senses together, to create a complete scene. First thing we need to establish is that not all people experience all senses at once, people with Autism do but they are gifted like that. Nearly everyone experiences there senses in distinctly and normally tune out some senses when going about their daily lives. It takes extreme training to soak in all the senses at once and have your brain register them all at once. So its ok to write in the same manner. So unless you want to highlight something special then […]

Sparking your imagination

There are some great artists out there. I am always amazed at the mind of an artist. I came across Lisana Gabriella while on Facebook and the caption that she put on it really triggered off a series of great questions in mind. Lisana said that the picture depicted space faring amazons. My first question was would space faring amazons really look like that? For starters they are naked, the buildings in the background are domes that are strengthened by honeycomb struts. Two answers sprung into my mind, space is cold but without wind resistance the shape of the buildings would matter little, if they were the landing craft. Another idea sprung to my mind, what if they where not space farers, but these where the amazons at home, they are most certainly alien. It could be that they the women are those […]

Why I chose to write.

Many writers have been asked what motived them to write? and where their ideas come from? To the latter question, I can provide a tangible – if not- satisfactory answer. My ideas just come to me. I might be sleeping and have a really good dream, and I it sparks off a series of questions in my mind that I then try and solve. I might ask: what would happen if….? Or what would this look like? Then my mind goes into overdrive and I start picturing several different answers to those questions. Then, I would select an answer and from there a story begins to form. However, to the first question as to what began the journey, that is a longer story. My mother tells me that I didn’t even like to read when I was younger. It was a book that […]
