Emotional Stories.

Today, I would like to talk about dealing with character emotions. It is said that a good writer will have experienced a wide range of emotions from deep hate to running over with joy and love. I would have to disagree. Many writers have learned to write great emotions without having experienced them. However I do believe that a good writer does need to at least feel a certain sort of empathy for their characters. A writer needs to understand the motivation behind their characters emotions to really tell the story of that emotion. In my first book, ‘The Mind Hack’, my character gets confused about what is real and what is not real. I haven’t experienced that particular emotion myself, but I understand why my character felt as he did. I knew my character, and understood what was important for him. In […]

An Attitude of Gratitude.

Hi, Today is my birthday, so in the spirit of celebrating my birthday I would like to give back to the people that have been with me over the last year. But first let me take you on a journey. This time last year I was working as a teacher in Mt Isa Australia. I had been married to my lovely wife for about 11 months, and at this time last year she was preparing to go back to Uganda.  This is going to be the highlights of my journey for the past year, so buckle up and get ready to ride. Now my wife Petua hails from Uganda, and because of that when we had our wedding here in Australia her parent were not able to make the visit from Australia, the flight is about 27 hours with at least one stop. […]

Themes

When writing a book, many people will advise putting a theme into the story. For example, you might want to talk about ‘Redemption of a character’, or discuss societies flaws or strengths. In my first book, ‘The Mind Hack’ I look at virtual reality. I look at what would happen if the line between reality and the virtual got blurred to the point where you couldn’t tell them apart. For me, this was a theme that I talked about as the purpose of the story. As I wrote a secondary theme emerged. I will let you read the story before I tell you what the secondary theme is. Leave me a comment with what you think the secondary theme is. I believe a theme can be helpful in creating discussion about the book and helping the writer talk about the book.. What if […]

Challenging expectations.

I saw this post and thought of responding to the normal comments that accompanies a partially naked person, but I thought I would better be able to make my point here with more clarity than on my phone. In my current book I am writing “The Bloodwood Curse” there is mention to a whole society where nude is normal and clothing is the exception rather than the rule.  In the picture that was not titled where there is no background information apart from what is in the picture, I noticed that; she is atop a very high tower, and below is a picture of farmland. The farmland extends to the horizon, and another tall spire can be seen, the engine itself is not a complete jet engine more an intake valve, the engine itself looks like it would redistribute the air being drawn in in many different directions so […]
